Fashion influencers put second-hand items in spotlight

The Young Professional Women's Association fashion show to benefit Andy's Attic, styled by Sweet Jane's.

It’s Fashion Week in New York. Back when I was a teenage dirtbag, the latest looks took a year or two to make their way up to Worcester, but in recent years, the trend cycle has sped up considerably. Now, styling tips and makeup tutorials are only a swipe away. You’ve probably spotted a lot of high schoolers dressed like impeccable business executives as a result.

Fashion influencers are leaning on secondhand items more than ever. The youths in particular have rejected the premise that an old man who lives in Ohio  is qualified to tell them what to wear. I happen to agree.

My fall fashion forecast for 2022 consists of five easily thrifted pieces that can be styled in a multitude of ways. (As always, if you like it, I think you should wear it.)

PLEATED TROUSERS AND SKIRTS

Sport your roomiest pleated pant with a casual white tank top, a formal blazer, or a sloppy button up. Elevate the look by swapping your trousers for a pleated tennis skirt. Style Muse: Serena Williams

BALLET FLATS

The ballet flat has made its glorious return. I love a sensible footwear trend. This time around, I’m seeing lots of ankle straps and square toes. Style Muse: Misty Copeland

LEATHER MOTO AND BOMBER JACKETS

Scour the men’s section for heavy oversized leather to pair with more feminine pieces this fall. Moto jackets with a single button at the collar are especially popular. Style Muse: Alexander Wang

SLIP DRESSES

If you are thrifting for a fall slip dress, start in the pajama section. I love the layered look of a silky slip over a white tee shirt or turtleneck and paired with chunky loafers or Doc Martens. Style Muse: Rachel Green

VESTS

Similar to jackets and blazers, the men’s section is the best place to find fun suit vests that can be worn on their own as tops. Style Muse: Taylor Swift
